BIRD WALK REPORTS:
Salmon Creek Road, Saturday, September 18, 1999 On a foggy day
10 birders on the beginners' walk spotted 38 species including Orange-crowned,
Yellow and Wilson's Warblers, Warbling Vireo, and Cedar Waxwings.
Duncan's Mills/Jenner, Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999 Dennis Beall and
fourteen birders started the walk under overcast skies, that cleared late
morning for a beautiful day. Wilson's and Yellow warblers, a female Western
Tanager gobbling blackberries was seen by all just fifteen feet away. A
new bird for Duncan Mill's list was a small flock of Tri-colored Blackbirds,
and a strangely out of place Red-throated Loon at the bridge. Forty-seven
species were observed.
Howarth Park/Spring Lake, Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999 Twelve birders
joined leader Betty Groce on a sunny, cool to hot day. Forty-nine species
were seen inclding a gorgeous male Mandarin Duck on Lake Ralphine and a
very cooperative male Pileated Woodpecker at Spring Lake. He landed in a
tree on the trail and flew at eye level toward the birders one tree at a
time until he was so close that we didn't need binoculars. After 10 minutes
we reluctantly continued our walk, but the Pileated remained, still pecking
away.
Bodega Bay, Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999
Dennis Beall and sixteen walkabout regulars had a beautiful day of birding
at Bodega Bay. Highlights were six species of grebes, a Peregrine Falcon
doing its thing at Doran Beach, a Common Yellowthroat at the rail ponds,
Sooty Shearwaters off the head. A total of 79 species were observed.
Point Reyes, Wednesday, November 3, 1999
On a mild, foggy day, 23 birders joined Jim and Jean Tonascia at Point Reyes.
A total of 83 species were observed at Point Reyes Headquarters, Olema Marsh,
Five Brooks, and Bolinas Lagoon. Highlights included Red Crossbills at Point
Reyes Headquarters and a Golden Eagle at Five Brooks. Both the Lesser and
Greater Yellowlegs and the Eurasian Wigeon were seen at Bolinas Lagoon.
Duncan's Mills and Jenner, November 11, 1999
Dennis Beall and twenty-three birders spent a partly cloudy to clear, beautiful
day at Duncan's Mills, Jenner, and Willow Creek Road. A great flock in the
campground produced great views of a male and female Nuttall's Woodpeckers,
Cedar Waxwings, a plethora of Pigmy Nuthatches, and many others. Sixty species
were seen.
Viansa Wetland, November 13, 1999
Betty Burridge and Stuart Young led 40+ nature-lovers through Sam Sebastiani's
man-made wetland near Sonoma Creek. Though the ponds weere dry, a clear,
warm fall day produced 24 species, including 1 adult golden Eagle, and at
least one each Loggerhead Shrike and Merlin. |
