Sanctuary Suit is Settled The Transportation Ballot Measures A Walk on the Wild Side October Birding in Sonoma County |
A Walk on the Wild Sideby Joannie Dranginis Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District sponsored a public hike at the Mayacamas Mountain Sanctuary on September 12th. In cooperation with Madrone Audubon, thirty-five hearty souls signed up in advance to explore a portion of the abandoned stage coach road that meanders through the back country of the preserve around Red Hill. The group was treated to the outstanding leadership of Peter Leveque, retired biology professor, and Bob Evans, a retired educator acting as historian for the Sanctuary, who coaxed the group through the strenuous cross-country terrain in 90- degree temperatures. The hikers were allowed frequent stops along the way to catch their breath and take in spectacular views of Knight's Valley and the Engles Bluffs. Peter and Bob provided a rich commentary on the brief history of the mining community of Pine Flat during the 1870's, as well as acquainting us with some of the plant communities on the property. One of the highlights of the hike was a brief stop in the shade at Whiskey Springs, where the adventurous could sample the clear, cool water from this surprisingly abundant natural spring. The hike finished up back at Pine Flat with drinks provided by the Open Space District. |
