Midweek Walkabout Results
Wednesday, September 9, 1998 Twenty-five folks
joined Dennis Beall for a foggy day at Bodega Bay and the first of the fall
walkabouts. While visibility was limited, the tide was right and the shorebirds
were close in for everyone's study and enjoyment. Highlights were: a Black-and-white
Warbler in Owl Canyon, Red Knots (nine birds), a Baird's Sandpiper,
Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers at the Rail Ponds and numerous Orange-crowned,
Wilson's and Yellow Warblers in various locations. A total of
74 species was recorded.
Wednesday, September 9, 1998 On a very cool and
windy day, fifteen birders did Duncan Mills and the R.V. park getting good
looks at Wood Ducks, a pair of Western Tanager, Pygmy Nuthatch
and Ash-throated Flycatcher. The wind really came up in the afternoon,
so after a count of 47 birds we called it a day.
Wednesday, September 16, 1998 Eight birders, including
a visitor from Pennsylvania, enjoyed a day at Point Reyes that started cool
and overcast but soon turned sunny and nice. The birding was the same, after
a slow start it picked up, and how. We were given the treat of watching
a pair of Black-and-white Warblers pose next to at least four Black-throated
Gray Warblers. All of us were able to observe the differences; what
a treat. Later a rough-legged hawk soared over Drake's Beach and then came
back for all to see. All three scoters, Cinnamon Teal, Lark Sparrows,
Warbling Vireos, and six kinds of warblers for a total of 64 species. |
