Field Trip Report
Saturday, May 23, 1998 On a pleasantly cool and
cloudy day, twelve people met leader Ian Morrison at the Sausal Creek Bridge
for a wonderful day of birding along Pine Flat Road. We started by witnessing
a Red-tailed Hawk devouring the contents of a Crow's nest while being
noisily attacked by two adult Crows. We found 63 species including Golden
Eagle, Purple Martin, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Lazuli Bunting, Western Tanager,
a singing Nashville Warbler, .and a male Yellow-rumped Warbler.
Our most startling discovery came on the top of the ridge at the end of
the road where we found three Western Rattlesnakes coiled up in the rocks.
Saturday, June 6, 1998 Twelve people joined Bud
Getty on a cool overcast day at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. The cool weather
seemed to make the birds more active. We all got excellent looks at Western
Tanager, Bullocks Oriole and Black-headed Grosbeaks. No one had
ever seen more Lazuli Buntings at Sugarloaf---they were everywhere
in the park. Woodpeckers were out in force---several Downy, Acorn, Nuttalls,
Northern Flicker and we heard the Pileated! We recorded a total
of 44 species during the three hour leisurely walk. Butterflies and flowers
added a lot to the trip also. |
