Mayacamas Campout May 1-2Reservations can be accepted up to April 30 for Madrone's Spring camp-out, May 1-2. The preserve is normally closed to overnight use, so this semi-annual Madrone event is your best opportunity to experience its precious evening, night, and early morning sights and sounds. We arrive any time after 4 PM Friday, and convene for a potluck dinner at 6:30. Please bring a supper dish to share, your own eating utensils, plates, and beverages, your breakfast, plenty of water, and camping gear. Madrone Audubon provides porta-potties and some cook stoves. There are no conveniences or running water at the Sanctuary but you will find good company, good food, and good birding. There is a $5 per person fee to help cover the cost of the porta-potties. For last-minute reservations, please call Madrone's answering machine at 546-7492 and leave a message. To reach the Sanctuary, exit Highway 101 at Dry Creek going east. At
the second light, turn left onto Healdsburg Avenue. At the Y, bear right
onto Alexander Valley Road and cross the Russian River. The road briefly
becomes Highway 128 and passes through Jimtown. Where 128 bears right, you
continue straight onto Pine Flat Road. From this point, it is exactly nine
miles to the campsite. Proceed onward and upward, and watch for MAS signs.
The road is one-lane and winding, with steep drop-offs in some places. Drive
carefully, and please carpool if possible. (The co-editor---the female one---apologizes for failing to include this event in last month's newsletter.) |
