Midweek Walkabout Results
Wednesday, October 15, 1997 Sixteen people with
leader Diane Hichwa searched for birds at Howarth Park and Spring Lake.
The 49 species for the day included Brown Creeper, Bewick's Wren, Lesser
Goldfinch, Green Heron, Common Moorhen, Fox Sparrow, Hermit Thrush,
the renamed Oak Titmouse, Cedar Waxwings, Townsend's Warbler and
a Hutton's Vireo. A cooperative Downy Woodpecker stayed in
view at 6 feet; a Sharp-shinned Hawk rode a thermal; Wood Ducks
scared out of Spring Lake's inlet; at least 11 species of butterflies were
investigated; and after lunch at the Oak Knoll area we watched a bobcat
for five minutes scouting the hill above us!
Thursday, October 23, 1997 This Walkabout was to
Western Marin County. The day started with a demonstration at the Point
Reyes Bird Observatory banding station at Palomarin. The group watched a
few birds being taken from the nets, then being quickly studied and banded,
and then released. The Palomarin personnel were most hospitable including
having made a pot of hot coffee. The group then birded the Bolinas Sewer
Ponds and the Pine Gulch Creek area. A total a 95 species were seen or heard.
Best birds were American White Pelican, Eurasian Wigeon, Golden Eagle,
Virginia Rail, American Avocet, Parasitic Jaeger, Elegant Tern and Townsend's
Warbler. The sharp eyes of Chris Grabill added several birds to our
day list.
Wednesday, October 29, 1997 A warm, calm day at
Bodega Bay enhanced the efforts of 37 folks for a total of 82 species. Highlights
for all, and lifers for some, were all three Scoters, a Pacific
Golden Plover, Short-eared Owl, and to finish the day, a Red-necked
Grebe. At the Head, some were fortunate to see Black-vented Shearwaters,
a Sei Whale, and for the first time for almost all, a lonely Sea Otter!
Thursday, November 6, 1997 In spite of a forecast
of rain, eight birders showed up at Lake Stafford. More than 100 Canada
Geese were there and the Spotted Sandpiper made its usual appearance.
After lunch at McGinnis Park, we toured the Los Gallinas oxidation ponds.
A total of 74 bird species were observed for the day. No rain until we left.
Wednesday, November 12, 1997 This Walkabout was
at Point Reyes, Five Brooks and Bolinas Lagoon. In sunny weather 12 birders
saw 73 species. A Ferruginous Hawk by Five Brooks soared overhead
giving everyone a good look. The hawk was also spotted on the ground in
a field 2[[florin]] miles north of Five Brooks. A Eurasian Wigeon
and Curlew were seen at Bolinas Lagoon. Very good view of Wrentits
and Kestrels added to a good birding day. |
