Pee Wee Winter Outings

December 14: Winter Solstice at Green Pastures Ranch
Green Pastures Ranch in Healdsburg is the destination for our Pee Wee Audubon outing on Sunday, December 14, from 11 AM to 3 PM. We'll join naturalists Janet Brode and David Beazlie for a winter stroll along Felta Creek, a beautiful stream winding through a thickly forested canyon. We'll be looking for steelhead trout and examining the salt rocks, waterfalls, and a Fish and Game stream restoration project. At lunch in a 100-year-old sheep barn, we'll hear stories of how various cultures have welcomed the Winter Solstice, when the days again begin to lengthen. And we'll learn how this active, productive farm operates in harmony with nature.

The hike is about two miles round trip. Wear layered clothing, a hat, gloves and a jacket. Bring a snack, lunch and liquids in a backpack, and if you'd like, holiday cookies to share. For reservations, call Elham at 573-7183. Stormy weather will cancel. If the weather is questionable, registrants call Janet at 887-7042 for an outing update.

Directions: Take Highway 101 north to the Central Healdsburg exit. From Healdsburg Ave., just before the railroad tracks, take a hard left at Mill Street, which becomes Westside Road. Pass West Dry Creek Road and Millcreek Road. Turn right on Felta Road. It makes a sharp right at the 'Not a Through Road' sign. Continue on and park in the farthest Westside School parking area. Arrive early to use the school restrooms, which are located in the front behind a large cutout circle in the wall.

January 11: Winter Birding at Howarth Park
On Sunday, January 11, from 10 AM to noon, Pee Wee will have a lively morning of birding at Howarth Park. Our delightful leader will be Claire Shurvinton, who is a biology teacher at Santa Rosa Junior College and the mother of two young children. She will point out the great variety of ducks and other birds that winter in the park, and let us in on some of their secrets. Please call Claire at 527-6118 for reservations.

January 24: Fourth Annual Bat Day
Christine Scott of the Bat Conservation Fund will be back for another exciting afternoon with the bats on Saturday, January 24, from 1 to 3 PM. She will bring along some live bats for us to see up close, and teach us about their lives and their interactions with other creatures. There will be bat games and activities. Meet in the Forum Room of the Central Library, at the corner of Third and E Streets, downtown Santa Rosa. Reservations required! Call Elham at 573-7183.

All Pee Wee registrants, please note: There is often a waiting list for Pee Wee Programs. Be sure to register early, and please let us know if you have to cancel.
