'Place to Play' Gets Go-ahead 1997 Christmas Bird Count Through the Garden Gate: Backyard Birding |
Plans for Mayacamas SanctuaryAs this issue of the Leaves goes to press, the City of Santa Rosa seems to be favoring the Geysers disposal option for its wastewater. Representatives of Madrone Audubon and California Audubon remain adamant that the "forever wild" easement on the Mayacamas Mountains Sanctuary must be respected. We fully expect that, if the Geysers option goes forward, it will follow a route that does not run the pipeline, with its storage tanks and pump stations, through the Sanctuary. Meanwhile, plans are moving ahead for the enhancement of conservation values at the Sanctuary. Peter Leveque is planning to set up nest boxes in February, and will need help mounting and monitoring them. Planning is also under way for habitat enhancement projects at the Sanctuary. These are ideal opportunities to get out to the Sanctuary, which is located on Pine Flat Road outside of Healdsburg, and to help maintain and restore this unique and beautiful place. If you'd like to help, please call Peter at 542-8946 or Sanctuary Committee Chair Bill Payne at 546-3331. We're also planning another spring camp-out at the Sanctuary in April. Watch future issues of the Leaves for details. The National Audubon Society plans to bring more than 80 of its Board members and staff to the Mayacamas Mountains Sanctuary in early December. The Board will be meeting in Napa, and will be interested to see this newest addition to the NAS Sanctuary system. Madrone Audubon plans to unveil a handsome new Sanctuary sign near the entrance to the property during the visit. |
