Youngsters Aid BirdathonA total of ten boys and girls, mostly aged seven and eight, joined the first-ever Pee Wee teams to participate in Madrone Audubon's annual Birdathon this spring. The young people raised more than $500 for Pee Wee and other Madrone education and conservation programs. Diane Hichwa led an enthusiastic Pee Wee team at Howarth Park and Spring Lake on February 17, and another on March 2. Each group identified more than 30 species. Specially exciting were sightings of Common Mergansers in elegant breeding plumage, an Osprey carrying and then eating a fish, the antics of a White-breasted Nuthatch, and aerobatic displays by Red-shouldered Hawks and a male Anna's Hummingbird. The youngsters showed remarkable skill in operating their binoculars and finding and identifying the birds, and spotting scopes assured that everyone had good looks at the birds on the lake. The Pee Wee Birdathoners included Benjamin Graff, Lindsey Kirkbride, Sean Kramer-Smith, Anthony Mark-Raymond, Kisha Maier, Paul Nichols, Austin Ramage, Dylan Ramage, Eric Rafla-Yuan, and Luke Rafla-Yuan. Special thanks to all the parents who participated and who helped their youngsters raise and collect pledges. Contributors will be listed in next month's Leaves, along with a full report on the 1997 Birdathon. |
