A special field trip to the Pepperwood property of the California Academyof Sciences is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, from 9 AM to 3 PM. The 3,100-acreproperty was given to the Academy 20 years ago by Ken Bechtel "forresearch and educational activities in the natural and environmental sciences."It has nine distinct plant communities, with over 6,700 species, more diversitythan exists in the entire British Isles, according to Linda Curry, who providedthe information for this article. The property has oak woodlands, pocketsof Douglas fir and redwood forests, vernal pools, serpentine chaparral, and riparian habitat, as well as six potential archeological sites and theHume Observatory. The Academy reportedly now plans to sell the property, and many conservationists are concerned.
