Madrone Turns Thirty

Madrone Audubon Society received its provisional charter from the NationalAudubon Society 30 years ago this month. Of the original 100 charter members,at least 10 are still active: Martha Bentley, Ann M. Brockman, Eleanor Guilford,Louise Hallberg, Deyea and Jack Harper, Corrine Holt, Dr. Rudolph Oppenheimer,Mrs. H.E. Shinabarger, and Eva Waters. (Are there others? If we missed anyone, please let us know.)

The chapter was organized in January of 1967, and held its first meetingin February. As described by Gaye LeBaron in the Press Democrat of January5, 1967, "The prime mover and shaker in this matter is Mrs. EvelynBowen who came here from Southern California and would like to see suchgroups as Audubon interested in Northern California 'while we still havesomething to save.'"

The Bewick's Wren insignia which we still use today was designed by Evelyn'shusband, Les Bowen.
