Beginners Bird Walks
by Ken Wilson

Saturday, January 18th., we spent the morning walking the stretch ofSanta Rosa Creek east from Willowside Road. Sixteen birders observed a totalof 44 species. Birds were generally absent from the creek due to the highwater level, however the surrounding area, including the pond, providedsome good sightings especially of the high numbers of Common Merganser.Toward the end of the morning a Merlin approached and perched ontop of a young pine tree offering a brief study of this feisty falcon.

Saturday, February 1st, saw us at West Third Street Ponds, a city wastewaterholding area. Thirteen birders had excellent looks at 37 species, mostlyducks. Numbers of Canada Geese came and went while three Black-neckedStilts called as they flew up and down the pond. The early morning lightenhanced the beauty of the Green-winged and Cinnamon Teals, while the five Buffleheads seemed whiter than ever. Our highlightof the day (you have to have one) was the chase of a Finch by anadult Sharp-shinned Hawk. It, the Finch, survived this time. Afterseveral more attempts the hawk left. This hawk had an unusually dark capwhich descended below its eyes.
