| | Pee Wee Explores Sandy Beaches and Rocky Shores A very low tide on the afternoon of November 10 will give us a chance tolearn more about our seashores and the animals of rocky beaches. We'll explorewith Ginger Parish, a naturalist who leads trips for the Academy of Sciencesand the Oceanic Society, and who has a particular love for marine biology.
At 1 PM, after lunch, we'll meet at Goat Rock State Park at the north endof the north parking lot. We'll walk out to the mouth of the Russian Riverwhere the seals are hauled out. Seabirds, Pelicans, and Ospreysdiving for fish add to the excitement here. Then we will drive 1 milesouth to Shell Beach for a tide-pooling adventure. Here we'll see a widevariety of sea plants and animals that have been exposed by the low tide.Ginger will also treat us to a special sea story. The program will lastuntil about 4:30. This is a good outing for those 4 and older.
Bring liquids and a snack and binoculars if you have them. Dress in layersfor the changing conditions: a t-shirt, long-sleeved shirt, jacket witha hood, windbreaker and a hat. Wear rubber boots or shoes that can get wet. Also bring a change of socks, shoes and pants for the ride home, for itis very easy to get wet out here. You may want to come early for a picniclunch on the beach before the program.
Directions: To get to Goat Rock State Beach from Santa Rosa, takeHighway 12 west to Sebastopol. Go right on Highway 116 toward Jenner. Gothrough Forestville, Guerneville, and Duncan Mills, then left (south) onHighway 1 for a short way (one mile). Turn right to Goat Rock State Beachand make a right to the north parking lot and go to the north end. Pleasecall Elham at 573-7183, if you plan to attend.
