Photo and Text by Norris Dyer ![]() This is the only species of grebe that lives year-round at the park and breeds there. They are ducklike, diving birds about 13"-14", seen daily in the freshwater channels. They sometimes venture into the central pond also. The young have striped heads (such as this one, photographed last spring). Even the young can open their mandibles wide enough to down good-sized crayfish. The chicks get to ride around on the adults for several weeks after hatching. There is an estimated population of 10-12 at the park. |
